14,500 square foot facility provides necessary funding to Advocates to End Domestic Violence
CARSON CITY, Nev. – Shaheen Beauchamp Builders is finalizing the new retail operation for Advocates to End Domestic Violence, Classy Seconds Thrift Store located at US Hwy 50 and Brown Street in Carson City.
Jeff Shaheen, co-founder of Shaheen Beauchamp Builders, has worked closely with Lisa Lee, executive director for AEDV, for many years to help Advocates recognize their goal of owning their own thrift store building.
“I have worked with Jeff for 15 years on this project,” Lee said. “He has explained every detail from financing to architecture, design to Geotech and then the construction process. I don’t think you would get that kind of long-term dedication and hand-holding from any other contractor. He constantly touched base with me and even though we are one of their smaller projects, I never felt like we were a small project.”
Lee said the real work started about three years ago, and the land was purchased two years ago, with the project breaking ground last May. She said Shaheen Beauchamp donated many supplies and additional labor on the project.
“This is phase one of three,” she said. “We still have shelters and offices to build. Classy Seconds is a strong 50 percent of our revenue. What’s raised in Carson City serves Carson City residents.”
Shaheen said after serving on the Advocates Board of Directors for several years and recognizing the important work that Advocates does, this project was a labor of love.
“We believe strongly in the mission of Advocates to End Domestic Violence,” he said. “While we hope there is an end to domestic violence, it is an honor to collaborate with such a necessary resource in our community to serve as many families as possible.”
The architect for the project was Darrin Berger of Berger Hannafin Architects. Resource Concepts Inc provided project civil engineering, as well as all the construction special inspections and testing required by Carson City.
Over the course of the project as many as 60 tradespeople, employed by fifteen local subcontractors, worked to complete the building and site improvements.
“In addition to all the hard work by the subcontractors, I am proud of the job that my project manager Brenda Erickson and project superintendent Eric Maidlow have done in helping Advocates realize the completion of their building” Shaheen said.
